چکیده

We explore whether the market variance risk premium (VRP) can be predicted. We measure VRP by distinguishing the investment horizon from the variance swap’s maturity. We extract VRP from actual S&P 500 variance swap quotes and we test four classes of predictive models. We find that the best performing model is the one that conditions on trading activity. This relation is also economically significant. Volatility trading strategies which condition on trading activity outperform popular benchmark strategies, even once we consider transaction costs. Our finding implies that broker dealers command a greater VRP to continue holding short positions in index options in the case where trading conditions deteriorate. 2015 Elsevier B.V. Variance dynamics: Joint evidence from options and high-frequency returns

This paper analyzes the S&P 500 index return variance dynamics and the variance risk premium by combining information in variance swap rates constructed from options and quadratic variation estimators constructed from tick data on S&P 500 index futures. Estimation shows that the index return variance jumps. The jump arrival rate is not constant over time, but is proportional to the variance rat...

The Term Structure of Variance Swap Rates and Optimal Variance Swap Investments

This paper performs specification analysis on the term structure of variance swap rates on the S&P 500 index and studies the optimal investment decision on the variance swaps and the stock index. The analysis identifies 2 stochastic variance risk factors, which govern the short and long end of the variance swap term structure variation, respectively. The highly negative estimate for the market ...

Variance Risk Premium Dynamics: The Role of Jumps∗

Using high-frequency stock market data and (synthetic) variance swap rates, this paper identifies and investigates the temporal variation in the market variance risk premium. The variance risk is manifest in two salient features of financial returns: stochastic volatility and jumps. The pricing of these two separate components is analyzed in a general semiparametric framework. The key empirical...

Conditional Time-varying Interest Rate Risk Premium: Evidence from the Treasury Bill Futures Market

We investigate the conditional interest rate risk premium in Treasury bill futures returns. A one-factor model predicts that the premium depends on the conditional variance. An Intertemporal CAPM based two-factor model predicts that it also depends on conditional covariance with the equity premium. Univariate and bivariate Integrated GARCH-in-Mean models suggest that the premium relates positiv...

Do Newly Listed Derivatives Affect the Market Risk Premium in a Thin Stock Market?

This study examines the effects on the stock market unitary risk premium and volatility associated with the listing of stock and stock index derivatives in Switzerland. Based on a univariate GARCH (1,1) specification of the stock index variance and a time-varying unitary risk premium representation, we can reject the hypothesis that stock and stock index derivatives listings do not affect the t...
